Palmetto Island is an ecosystem, unlike any other place we have visited. It gets its name from the abundance of dwarf palmetto trees scattered throughout the park, but there is lots more to see. Lagoons and marshland abound, and it’s a kayaker’s dream to paddle through the other-worldly atmosphere: giant gnarled oaks draped in Spanish moss just out beyond the water, and countless species of birds abound along with a wide variety of other wildlife. This unique and beautifully complex environment was the inspiration for Palmetto.
